Building on a relevant Foundation degree qualification, this dynamic one-year Honours degree in finance & law will provide you with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge for a future career in the professional and commercial world of finance & law.
Using the extensive resources available from the Faculty of Management will enable you to broaden the technical and interpersonal skills now demanded by the market. The course will provide you with a sound understanding of the broader elements of finance & law, coupled with opportunities for personal and professional development.
Optional units enable you to tailor the course to suit a specialist area of expertise you wish to pursue a career in, or can broaden your understanding of finance & law to open up further career opportunities.

Course programme

Course details On this course you will usually be taught by a range of staff with relevant expertise and knowledge appropriate to the content of the unit. This will include senior academic staff, qualified professional practitioners, demonstrators, technicians and research students. You will also benefit from regular guest lectures from industry. Year 1 Core units Company Law: Build on general legal knowledge that applies to the business environment, to extend your competence in Company Law. You'll learn how to apply Company Law at an advanced level. Strategic Management: Develop the intellectual and professional qualities you'll need for performing strategic analysis, making choices between strategies and executing those strategies with desired results. Investment Management: The theories underpinning investment management and their practical application. You'll learn about the current features of capital markets and savings products which will prepare you for business and personal investment. If you don't have IELTS 7.0 or higher, you'll also need to study the following unit: Advanced Academic English (AAE): Combine and refine your language and study skills. This includes accessing oral and written information, note-taking, participating in seminars, learning strategies for formal assessments and using reference materials. Option units (choose two) Law of International Trade: Appreciate the relationship between legal principles and commercial practice, and recognise the practices and procedures for trading goods nationally and commercially. Financial Regulation: An insight into key financial regulatory theories, forms and rationale in the financial sector. You'll engage with and analyse regulatory concepts and systems that meet the needs of the regulator and the regulated. Research Study: An opportunity to develop skills in conducting an effective research project. You'll collect and analyse secondary and primary data and evaluate outcomes, showing your understanding of the research environment. Starting a Business: Explore the practicalities of starting a small business. Start-up survival and failure will be examined, along with the suitability of Government and Enterprise initiatives for supporting business start-ups. You'll research legal issues that may affect business ventures. Risk Modelling & Management: Gain an understanding of risk in a modern business environment and the risk management processes needed for controlling such risks. You'll develop skills for analysing risk scenarios and solutions. Commercial Law & Transactions: The institutional and transactional features of business law. You'll explore the transfer of ownership of personal property among companies and individuals, along with legal relationships. Contemporary Issues in Management: Contemporary and universal issues affecting organisations, managers and employees. You'll look at the increasingly globalised environment in which businesses operate, and gain the ability to analyse and reflect on the complexities and uncertainties inherent in modern business and management. Employment Law: Develop your understanding of employment law, contracts and relationships. You'll appreciate the wider issues of the business and the role of the law, and learn about the key features of employment to prepare you for business and the world of work. Family Law: Examine the law as it applies to different members of the family, evaluate forces for change which affect families and how these are reflected in case law and approaches for reform. You'll cover the law in relation to children, domestic violence, the unmarried family, the role of family in society and the pressures for change.
