This is a practice-based degree based upon the industry of music that cultivates artist development and helps build confidence in recording music and performing it live in front of audiences. The programme will enhance your perception of the spectral, spatial and dynamic characteristics of music and sound via the use of technology. Themes explored include music technology, music practice and live performance, recording and production, sound design, album artwork and social media. You will be able to apply your music and sound skills in areas such as film, TV and theatre and be taught using state-of-the-art facilities, engaging with technology to bring music to fruition. The degree is ideal for those who play a musical instrument, or sing, and want to pursue a career that exploits this. It is also suitable for those who want to record and produce the music of others.

About this course

Throughout the programme you will be immersed in a broad spectrum of the themes and practices of the music industry, providing you with expert knowledge and technical ability, a flair for music composition and songwriting, confidence in performance, and entrepreneurial skills. The aim is to ensure you graduate with the capability for creative thinking and the ability to apply knowledge to achieve practical outcomes in professional contexts associated with the music industry.

Language modules in French, Spanish or Mandarin, delivered at the Edge Hill Language Centre, are available to study as an integral part of this degree. A single Language module can be studied instead of either MUS1010 Ear, Voice, Song or MUS1011 Music and Society.

Optional modules provide an element of choice within the programme curriculum. The availability of optional modules may vary from year to year and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. This means that the availability of specific optional modules cannot be guaranteed. Optional module selection may also be affected by timetabling requirements.

International students enrolling on the programme in academic year 2017/18 are £11,575 per annum.

How will I be assessed?

The programme is assessed entirely by coursework. This includes practical desktop (DAW/MIDI) and studio-based recording assignments, report writing, blogs, videos and oral presentations. You will also have the opportunity to complete a dissertation or practical project in the final year of the programme. There are no formal written examinations as part of the current assessment methods on this programme.

Who will be teaching me?

BA (Hons) Music Production programme is delivered by a team of expert academic staff drawn from the departments of both Media and Performing Arts. The two departments have creative expertise spanning a wide range of disciplines, including performance and production, music theory, media and culture, film and TV production, sound for picture and sound design, experimental music, songwriting, research and practice-lead research. Moreover, most of the staff who teach on the programme are practising musicians themselves.
