The BA (Hons) in Popular Music is an exciting programme of study over three years for the contemporary rock/pop musician seeking a career in the music industry. Areas of study include Performance, Song Writing/Composition, Music Technology and Music Business
This programme offers students the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in relation to performance, song writing/ composition, music technology and the music business. Students will develop a wide range of competencies which will equip them for entry into the popular music industry or for further study at postgraduate level.
The programme has a vocational bias and a high level of relevance to actual current practice in the music industry which will help students to become practitioners who are confident and proficient performers, able to create original music, use technology both in performance, recording and composition and who have a highly developed understanding of the music business.
Year three includes focused work in subjects chosen by students from a range of options so that specialised skills and interests can be developed which are relevant to career aspirations. Whilst maintaining a clear professional relevance, students will also be expected to develop transferable and intellectual skills that will facilitate progression to higher levels of study or movement into employment.

Graduates can develop self employment opportunities or gain employment in relation to a wide range of professional activities including performance, song writing/composition, recording/music technology, music business and teaching. The programme also provides the opportunity to progress to postgraduate study at MA level and higher, or to a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) courses for entry into the teaching profession. Additionally it prepares students for direct entry into the music industry.
Graduates may develop self employment opportunities or gain employment in relation to a wide range of professional activities including performance, song writing/composition, recording/music technology, music business and teaching.
A minimum of 160 UCAS points. An appropriate level of practical performance skill and experience (instrumental or vocal) is required. Entry is normally by audition/interview which will include instrumental or vocal performance and consideration of previous experience. Overseas candidates may submit recordings and other evidence.

Applying for a Full-Time Degree-Level course
Apply through UCAS
If you would like to apply for any of Colchester Institute's Degree Level courses, your method of application will differ depending on whether
you want to apply for a full-time or part-time version of your chosen course. If you are applying full-time, you will need to apply through the
Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), which is a UK-based charity whose main role is providing the application process for almost
all British universities.
The service cost £23 for a multi application and £12 for a single application in 2015, however it is possible this may increase for 2016 applicants.
Each course has a unique "course code" that you will need to make note of and use during your applciation. You can find out more information and

Applying for a Part-Time Degree-Level course
All part-time degree-level courses are not offered through UCAS, and must be applied for directly through Colchester Institute.

Applying as a Full-Time International Student (EU & Overseas)
Applications for Higher Education courses from International Students must also be made via the Universities
and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Applications can be made on-line from any country via the UCAS website
at www.ucas.com. Details of all eligible courses

International Applications made via UCAS will be forwarded to us for processing but the offer and acceptance
procedure is made through UCAS and not directly with us.

Applying as an Part-Time International Student (EU only)
Students coming into the UK on a Tier 4 (General) student visa will only be eligible to apply
for full-time courses at a minimum NQF level 3
or above or full-time English Language Programmes.
