Course programme

This course covers practically every aspect of tourism management, from formulating policy and planning to finances and visitor attraction management. You’ll study French, German, Spanish or English as a Foreign Language to prepare you for working in an international environment. You’ll also spend a trimester overseas in Year 3 to immerse yourself in your chosen language - an invaluable chance to boost your fluency. Tourism management requires the ability to look outwards and capitalise on opportunities. You'll develop organisational and business skills that take into account the diversity of cultures involved in this global industry. You'll also develop your abilities in research, time management and presentation methods. With the number of tourist ventures and operations in and near the city, you’ll have plenty of options for part-time work, placements and employment after graduation. You’ll graduate with a clear direction in tourism and a wealth of experience gained from your involvement in the thriving local tourism scene, giving you the insights to succeed in tourism management in the UK or around the world. This is a full-time course studied over four years. You’ll learn by a variety of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials and independent study. A qualification in the appropriate language is required for entry. This course contributes towards professional accreditation with the Institute of Hospitality. What you study Below is an indication of the modules you may study. These will be supplemented by choices from a course-specific option pool. Year 1 Introduction to Hospitality, Tourism and Events Intercultural and Organisational Management The Global Tourism Industry Language One option Year 2 Business and Management Challenges Tourism Impacts Facilities Planning for Hospitality, Tourism and Events Visitor Attraction Management LanguageOne option Year 3 International Tourism Policy and Planning Service Management Language Study abroad, or Language plus two options Note Study Abroad is compulsory for all students studying French, German or Spanish as their main language and will take place in a country in which this language is spoken. Only students whose main language is English as a Foreign Language may, with the agreement of the programme leader, choose to remain at Edinburgh Napier during the Study Abroad period. You would then study the appropriate English as a Foreign Language module plus another two modules.
