The Journalism combined honours programme at Buckingham is based around the notion of ‘total journalism’ – the belief that an effective journalist should be confident and proficient in the skills needed to produce compelling stories in any medium, whether online, in print, on air or on mobile. Equally important is the ability to engage in the media employment market either working for an organisation or as an independent. We firmly believe there is no such thing as an unemployed journalist. The programme is taught by practising journalists with a love of sharing their expertise and knowledge. Groups are small and dynamic, and rely on close interaction to allow each student to develop a real sense of professional principle and personal style.A substantial element of learning takes place in a newsroom environment as students will, from early in the degree programme, be producing copy, audio, and video for the University’s live news bulletin, Buckingham News, which is broadcast every Wednesday. Journalism students also have the right to an hour of airtime on the University radio station, Bucks 101.

Course programme

The programme includes modules on broadcast journalism, principles of media practice, and data journalism, together with more specialist courses such as investigative reporting and sports journalism. Public Relations is an increasingly lucrative area for those with journalism skills and the programme also looks at how graduates can adapt their skills for this arena. The English Literature minor offers an understanding of contemporary literary and cultural theory while never losing sight of the values of liberal education. Students read widely and through a combination of period study and thematic study achieve an informed understanding of the discipline with reference to the critical debates that animate it.The Journalism with English Literature degree has a proud tradition of producing graduates with outstanding powers of analysis and the techniques needed to enable them to communicate their ideas compellingly. This is the 3-year format of the BA (UCAS code P502), which allows you the traditional summer break. Starting each September, there are 3 terms per year, leading to an assessment period in early June. Then the summer is free, before the return for the new academic year in late September. This allows you more time for reading and reflection, for hands on experience in the media studio, and for building up an extended portfolio of work. For the 2-year format of the degree see BA Journalism with English Literature | 2 Years, 2 Years (+ 1 term). Our recent graduates have gone on to pursue careers in journalism, media, writing, teaching, publishing, marketing, and business.Modules available on this course
