Course programme
The BA degree in Modern Languages with Business and Management is a relatively new course with a practical and vocational bias. Students study two languages to degree level, and gain proficiency in business administration. On the languages side, courses aim generally to develop skills in the written and spoken language, and particularly to impart a command of the language of economics and commerce. Study time is divided equally between each element of the scheme, one-third being devoted to business and management, and the remaining two-thirds being divided between the two languages. The scheme falls into two parts:
Part I (Level 1)
Part I lasts for one year. In each language, you join other language students to follow language modules designed to develop a wide range of written, spoken and comprehension skills on the basis of a series of topics, and a content module intended to further your knowledge of the culture and society of the countries where your languages of study are spoken. If you are studying one of your languages as a beginner, much of your study in the new language is devoted to mastering the basics of that language. On the successful completion of Part I you progress to:
Part II (Levels 2 and 3)
Part II for modern languages and business and management students is normally of three years' duration, one of which is spent abroad. In each of the two languages you follow general language modules, taken in common with other language students, and specialised language courses, intended to give you a mastery of the language of economics and commerce. The second year of Part II is the:
Year Abroad
The year abroad is usually divided between countries of the two languages studied. Students follow either a suitable course in an institution of higher education, or spend some time engaged in appropriate business work. You also undertake project work during the year abroad. You are advised to apply to your local authority for a four-year grant in case you need support for maintenance during the year abroad.
