Course programme

Course Content Year 1

You will be introduced to the theoretical and practical concepts of Design, initially through a combination series of shared first-year symposia and events and focused subject-specific projects.

Year 2

Basic principles, theories, working practices and technical instruction will be covered, and you will be set projects that offer a broad introduction to materials, specialist jewellery and silversmithing techniques.

Year 3

An externally facing professional practice year where there are a range of opportunities for internship, exchange, competitions and live projects with industry. Electives within the wider University are available during Year 3. A live project allows you to design and develop a jewellery collection for public exhibition as well as work with new technologies alongside the traditional time-honoured techniques and processes.

Year 4

You will feel confident about your ability to express ideas, opinions and concerns through your practical and theoretical work. Practice and techniques are consolidated and refined while developing your individual voice to produce a final body of studio work. You are encouraged to develop an awareness of the commercial and critical potential of your work and your future career possibilities as jewellery or silversmithing designer/maker.

The majority of teaching and learning is through involvement in a range of experiential projects, situated in a studio environment. Conceptual, material and technical issues are explored through seminars, workshops, lectures, tutorials and critiques.

Research, critical thinking and study of the visual, intellectual, social and professional contexts that shape creative design practice are regarded as essential to your development. This often involves participation in exhibitions, competitions, collaborations and live industry projects.
