The Bachelor of Architecture and Environments (BAE) provides a thorough architectural education within the framework of the wider built environment. While design is central to the degree, you will gain an understanding of urban planning and policy, architectural science and the digital technology that underlays contemporary design and modelling.

You will develop a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between architects, urban planners, urban designers, heritage conservationists, property developers, engineers, construction managers and other built environment professionals. Our unique program opens the door to a wide range of professions in the field and provides the skills and knowledge to operate successfully in today's complex and globalised built environment.

You will learn the latest techniques through intensive practical, laboratory and studio-based classes. Studies will also cover best practice construction techniques, structural principles and building material properties.

Core units are complemented by electives that allow you to deepen your knowledge within the faculty—or to explore the unrivalled breadth of study areas across the University of Sydney—and the degree culminates in a capstone design studio. Your studies will be informed by the innovative research of the academic staff and professional expertise of our visiting lecturers. The BAE draws on the full range of the faculty's disciplines and laboratories, which are the most extensive in Australia.

Course programme

What is an elective?

An elective is a unit of study within a degree, usually an option within a course. Electives allow more detailed study of a particular subject. Students may choose electives from units offered by the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning, or from the Faculties of Arts, Economics, Engineering and Information Technologies or Science (timetable permitting).

Course opportunities

The Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning has a number of faculty-specific exchange programs available to currently enrolled students. Bachelor of Architecture and Environment students may undertake exchange in the second year or first semester of the third year of their degree. It is usually easier to obtain studio space at the start of the overseas academic year which, in the northern hemisphere, typically commences in September.
