The four-year Bachelor of Arts (Languages) degree is designed for worldly students who wish to link their humanities and social sciences studies with the core study of one or more foreign languages. It allows you to specialise in your primary language and take a second major in another language or choose a non-language subject area.
Some of our students have begun their language studies in secondary school or elsewhere, while others embark on a new language at beginners’ level within our language departments – both options are possible within our degree.
We offer a diverse selection of language majors, ranging from Indonesian, to Arabic, Greek, Korean and more.
A standout feature of this degree is the compulsory, subsidised in-country study component that enables you to spend one or two semesters studying at a designated university in the country of your primary language. Not only does this in-country study provide a valuable opportunity to enhance your linguistic fluency and cultural knowledge, once successfully completed is also credited towards your University of Sydney degree.
The linguistic and cultural competence acquired by undertaking a Bachelor of Arts (Languages) prepares you for further studies and/or work overseas, and offers you international career opportunities in the private and public sector, such as diplomacy and international trade.

Course Structure
Study planThe Bachelor of Arts (Languages) may be undertaken full-time over four years or part-time over eight years. Full-time students enrol in junior units of study with a maximum 48 credit points (cp) during first year. A typical unit of study has a value of 6cp. All students complete two majors from arts and social sciences subject areas including at least one major in a modern language. Each major comprises 36cp of senior units of study, taken over second and third year. The fourth year allows students the choice of continuing their study of senior units and provides room in the degree for a third major from an arts and social sciences subject area or from other faculties within the University (subject to permission from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences).
Alternatively students can choose to complete an honours year specialising in the language subject area of their major or combined honours in the language subject area and the second major subject area. Honours is both a preparation for postgraduate study and a capstone to an undergraduate degree. Honours extends your intellectual range, hones your research abilities and analytical techniques, and helps you to develop the personal and professional skills needed to see a research project though to completion. The Honours fourth year comprises seminar classes and work toward a short thesis on an independent research project under the supervision of an academic staff member who is an expert in the field of your research.
