Course programme

Syllabus
Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology:
This module introduces learners in the allied health field with little or no prior biology knowledge to anatomy and physiology. Content is organized according to body systems, and focuses on the body working together to promote homeostasis.

Evidence-Based Validation of Herbal Medicine including Phytochemical and Phyto-Pharmacological evaluation:
This Module brings together current thinking and practice in the areas of characterization and validation of natural products. It covers all aspects of evaluation and development of medicines from plant sources, including their cultivation, collection, phytochemical and phyto-pharmacological evaluation, and therapeutic potential. Emphasis is placed on describing the full range of evidence-based analytical and bio-analytical techniques used to characterize natural products, including -omic technologies, phyto-chemical analysis, hyphenated techniques, and many more.

Herbal Medicine: Pharmacodynamic Part 1 and 2:
This Module examines in extensive detail the physiologic effects of complimentary and alternative therapies, foods, supplements, vitamins, and traditional herbal remedies including the adverse effects and interactions of each herb, drug, and food.

Herbal Medicine: Biomolecular and Clinical:
This Module focuses on presenting current scientific evidence of biomolecular effects of selected herbs and their relation to clinical outcome and promotion of human health. It includes experimental approaches for looking at the bioactive components in herbs. It also addresses the ethical challenges of using herbal medicine and its integration into modern, evidence-based medicine.
This module also contain an in-depth scientific examination of effects of individual herbs, as well as their use in the treatment of important diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, dermatologic disorders, neurodegenerative disease, and diabetes. Due to the strong associations between oxidative stress, ageing, and disease, the powerful antioxidant properties of herbs and spices are also examined. The herbs featured are some of the most widely used remedies and cover a wide range, including flowering herbs, fruits and berries, roots and rhizomes, and fungi.

Herbal Medicines Interactions:
This module contain information on herb-drug, herb-supplement, herb -food and herb-laboratory test interactions all of which is data referenced. Commercial herbal medicinal products are increasingly consumed on a regular basis by people in the developed world. Often such products are taken concurrently with conventional medicines, frequently without the knowledge of health care professionals. As more evidence has become available, there has been an increasing awareness of the potential and actual problems of interactions, often dangerous, between conventional medicines and herbal medicines. This module brings together available data on approximately 200 of the most commonly used herbal medicines in highly structured, rigorously scientific results.

Traditional Herbal Medicine Research Methods:
This module introduces the methodology for collection and identification of herbal materials, extraction and isolation of compounds from herbs, in vitro bioassay, in vivo animal test, toxicology, and clinical trials of herbal research. To fully understand and make the best use of herbal medicines requires the close combination of chemistry, biochemistry, biology, pharmacology, and clinical science.

Regulation and Validation of Plant-derived Medicines for Health:
This module provides a reference model for those who would like to start the Research and Development process for a natural product. It also discusses fundamental issues in the development of traditional medicines for the benefit of health care and brings awareness to the many problems facing the development of medicinal herbal products, such as quality control, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic issues.

Herbal Medication Around the world:
This module look at most common herbs used in a number of countries worldwide.

Herbal Preparation:
This module emphasizes the point that herbal medicine-making is fundamental to every culture on the planet and is accessible to everyone. It covers herbal preparation for numerous ailments and disorders.
