Balinese Massage

Originating from Indonesia's spice islands this treatment works on the energy lines and Marma points of the body. The Mande Lulars massage cleansing properties and benefits are also related to the chakra point of the body.

Some elements of the massage can be traced back to the warriors of the ancient art of Kalari, the warriors believed there are specific pressure points all over the body which are linked to spiritual and physical health - they called these the Marma Points. The warriors used the marma points as a guide to inflict severe injury and pain. They believed in the power of these marma points to the extent that the warriors dressed themselves and their horses with protective armour that covered the Marma Points. After battle the warriors would massage these marma points. Soon the principles of marma point massage was passed into Ayurvedic medicine. Marma Points are thought to be junctions in the body where different types of tissue such as muscles, bones, ligaments and blood vessels meet.

Air, Fire, Water, Ether, and Earth are the elements which represents the marma points. The three energies used are:

Vata: Energy associated with the sense of touch, it governs fear, pain and anxiety and breathing. Imbalances in vata energy can cause fearfulness and indecisiveness. This is linked to Air and Ether.

Pitta: This energy controls the body temperature, metabolism and digestion. It is formed of Fire and Water.

Kapha: this is all about the physical and psychological strength. If imbalanced it can cause an apathetic, tired, lethargic person.

The vata pitta and kapha energies intersect at each of the 107 marma points in the body.
