    A Level

This is a 1 year programme aimed at developing learners to become junior barbers, and covers basic barbering techniques. Learners need to have prior experience such as studying, or have studied, Level 2 hairdressing or currently working in a barber's shop or hair salon. The course is part time evening basis only. A hairdressing kit and uniform are a compulsory requirement for the course. Course fees apply.

About this course

Previous experience is required to undertake this qualification such as currently studying, or previous study of, NVQ level 2 hairdressing, hands on work experience within a barber's shop or hair salon. A desire and self motivation to work within the hairdressing/barbering industry is essential.  There will be an interview and selection process carried out for acceptance of suitable candidates.  A barbering kit and uniform is also required for the course.

Course programme

  • This qualification will provide you with the requisite knowledge, understanding and skills to work competently as a barber
  • Throughout this qualification you will have a responsibility to reduce risks to health and safety, advise and consult with clients, shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp, cut hair using basic barbering techniques, cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques and dry and finish men's hair
  • You will be supervised by technical staff and assessed on your occupational competence.

The programme provides progression onto a level 3 barbering course and/or employment as a junior barbering stylist within the industry.

Additional information

Continual practical observation/assessment on real paying clients throughout the programme.

Written tests and oral questions for each unit and assignments to ensure essential knowledge and understanding.

Some units available bilingually.
