Objectives:
To provide a basic understanding of braking systems and service / repair requirements.
Content:
· Introduction and course outline
· Pre-course test.
· Health & safety requirements.
· Use of axle stands and wheel chocks.
· Dangers associated with brake dust - use vacuum & recommended dust removers.
· Brake Tools and Materials
· Recommended special tools for brake service.
· Pad retraction tool.
· Piston retraction tool.
· Cleaning fluids / lubricants (explanation of what not to use and why, mineral based products).
· Vapour lock tester.
· Hose clamp.
· Brake bleeding equipment.
· Brake adjuster.
· Brake Fluids and Test Equipment
· Precautions to be taken when using brake fluid (damage to paintwork and skin).
· Explanation of fluid boiling temperatures and recommended change periods.
· Use of brake fluid test equipment.
· Disc Brakes (Reference to manufacturers service guidelines)
· Prepare vehicles and associated safety.
· Visual checks on brake pipes for corrosion and damage.
· The wear tolerance of disc pads.
· Clean and examine calliper for serviceability.
· Remove pads.
· Inspect disc for scouring and corrosion, check disk "run out" with dial test indicator.
· Check calliper mounting bolts etc.
· Retract calliper pistons using piston retraction tool.
· Replace pads, pins and shims.
· Final Test / Course Review / Debrief Additional Information:
Personal protective equipment is required.
A certificate will be issued on satisfactory completion of the course.
