Basic Electrical Maintenance

OBJECTIVE: To provide the delegate with an appreciation of basic electrical maintenance to enable them to safely undertake tasks for which they have received training, thus enabling them to perform minor tasks which would normally require an electrician. The training will cover both theoretical and practical skills.

This course would suit persons with some practical engineering knowledge but little or no electrical knowledge.

Course Content:

  • Electrical Safety
  • Safe Working Practices including Insulated Tools and Permits to Work
  • Common Voltage Ranges within Industry
  • Correct Selection of Test Instruments
  • Safe Testing of Voltages
  • Safe Isolation including Lock-Off Procedures
  • Testing of Fuses and their Identification
  • Cable Stripping and Termination
  • Uses of SY and CY Cable including Glanding Off
  • Uses of Armoured Cable & Glanding Off for both Weatherproof and Non-Weatherproof Glands
  • Correct Selection and Application of Crimp Terminals
  • Safe Blanking Off of Unused Cable Entries as for BS7671 (16th Edition Regulations)
  • Purpose and Importance of Earthing
  • Different Threads used for Cable Glands
  • New and Old Cable Colour Identification
  • Testing of Micro-Switches, Stop & Start Switches
  • Making Single Phase and 3 Phase Extension Leads including Testing
  • Purpose and Connection of Overload Relays
  • Connection and Testing of 3 Phase Motors
  • PLC Inputs and Outputs Identification
  • Identification of Coil Voltages on Relays, Contactors and Solenoid Valves
  • Reading Basic Electrical Circuit Diagrams
  • Fault Finding

On successful completion of this course and subject to the delegate achieveing an acceptable standard, a HETA attendance certificate will be awarded.

PPE - For the duration of this course delegates are required to provide their own Personal Protective Equipment, ie Long Sleeve Overalls, Safety Spectacles and Safety Boots/Shoes.
