Description
This
is a course for those who wish to learn and practice basic counselling
skills and discover more about counselling and the counselling process. It
is a good foundation for those who wish to progress to a certificate level
course in counselling skills and counselling. It is ideal for those
involved in the helping professions and working with people in an
organisational setting or a voluntary capacity.
This course leads
to a SROCN Certificate with one unit, Basics of Counselling, worth six
credits at level 2, if you would like more information about the course

Both
of the course tutors are trained, experienced and practising counsellors.
Course
Content
Enable you to define and understand counselling; to
differentiate it from other helping skills/activities; to start learning
some counselling skills and to become a little more self-aware. Course
members will be able to participate in exercises and skills practice
sessions.
Consideration will also be given to applications of
counselling skills and the ethical implications of using them. There will
be a brief look at handling change and life's developmental stages. Each
session will include some reflection time for the group, to process the
evening's experiences. This course prepares students for direct
progression to specific vocational courses.
Where a course is aimed
towards an assessment/examination, it is expected that all students will
enter for the qualification.
Method of Assessment
It is
expected that all students will enter for the qualification. Students need
to attend at least 8 out of the 10 sessions.
Progression
Students
may wish to progress to other more advanced courses in Counselling Skills
or GCSE, AS/AL Psychology. Ask the tutor for advice.
Materials
Handouts covering relevant material will be provided.
There will be a reading list for those who wish to learn more about what
has been covered on the course. If you would like to read anything before
the course starts, Pete Sanders' 'First Steps in Counselling' is
recommended and is available from the College Bookshop.
