BCOT COURSE IN COUNSELLING SKILLS
Entry Requirements
Places on the course are offered after a
short interview. Applicants should have some knowledge of counselling,
having undertaken at least a day's training or the equivalent. BCOT's ten
weeks Basics of Counselling course provides a suitable foundation.

Description
This course was
formerly known as the Certificate in Counselling Skills, it is designed
for those who wish to acquire and develop counselling skills. These skills
are particularly useful to those whose work involves people eg nurses,
staff development officers, social workers, teachers, special needs
classroom assistants, voluntary workers and those involved with Human
Resources. It is also appropriate for those who have done some
introductory training, such as the college's short 'Basics of Counselling'
course and wish to develop their skills further. The course tutor, Judith
Taylor is a British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy
Accredited Counsellor.
In addition to the class there will be two 3
hour sessions on loss in the spring term.
Course Content
There
are three elements to the course: counselling skills, knowledge and
self-awareness. Regular opportunities will be given for you to practice
your skills and develop. There are course meetings near the beginning and
at the end of the course. All six course units can be gained at level 2 or
level 3.
Unit 1 - Exploration skills: listening, attention giving,
active listening
Unit 2 - Understanding skills: challenging, immediacy,
deeper empathy, recognising themes
Unit 3 - Action skills: goal
setting, creative thinking, problem solving, action planning, evaluation
There
are two theory units covering, person-centred, psychodynamic and cognitive
behavioural counselling
Unit 6 - Self-awareness: giving and receiving
feedback, writing about personal awareness development, keeping a personal
learning journal.
Where a course is aimed towards an
assessment/examination, it is expected that all students will enter for
the qualification.
Method of Assessment
15 minute DVD of a
practice counselling skills session; a 20 minute audio tape, transcript
and commentary; two essay/reports; a 30 minute DVD of a practice
counselling skills session with an essay/report. A personal learning
journal, which is not assessed, is to be kept weekly throughout the course
and drawn on for the final piece of coursework.
Normally you must
attend 80% of the sessions to pass the course.
Progression
This
course is a recognised route to a Diploma in Counselling course. Students
will find that this level of counselling skills enhances their employment
role with people and is an asset in voluntary work.
Materials
Stationery. DVD and audio tapes. Access to DVD and audio
cassette players.
As a companion to the course, 'Learning to
Counsel' (Second Edition) by Jan Sutton & William Stewart is recommended
and is available from the College Bookshop.
