Beauty Therapy NVQ 1 Entry Requirements

• A range of GCSEs at E-G including English and preferably Maths and Science or equivalent (NB this is minimum requirement, D grades are recommended)
• An Entry Level course with good evidence of ability to achieve at a higher level.

Entry is subject to a successful interview and initial diagnostic test. You will need to buy the salon uniform and equipment.

Content
You will study a variety of units including assisting the therapists in:

• Basic Facial Treatments
• Health and Safety
• Reception
• Team Work
• Client Care
• Basic Manicure
• Basic Pedicure

In addition to this Key Skills will form part of your final qualifications.

Additional Information
Students will be required to follow a strict salon dress and behaviour code.

Salon dress code
When working in the salons, due to hygiene and health and safety reasons, it is essential that you follow the following professional salon dress code:

• Long hair must be tied back with none dangling.
• A discreet amount of make-up must be worn for client sessions
• Jewellery must be restricted to:
  up to 2 pairs of stud earrings worn in the lobe only
  a discreet gold or silver chain
  a flat wedding band
  a fob watch
• All facial piercings, including tongue studs, must be removed. Watches, bracelets and rings can scratch the client.
• Visible tattoos must be covered by either a plaster or remedial camouflage make-up
• A clean, pressed white salon tunic must be worn with white or flesh coloured underwear.
• Plain black trousers - no turn-ups, pinstripes, combats, jeans, cropped, skinny leg, velvet, corduroy or
• brushed cotton/ black denim
• Black enclosed shoes e.g. low-heeled court shoes, loafers, nurses shoes, 'mary-janes' etc. No trainers, fabric, open-toes, sling-backs sandals, mules, clogs, stilettos, platforms etc.
• Nails must be clean, short and polish free.

Salon Rules

• Mobile phones must be switched off.
• There is no eating or drinking in classrooms.
• Students must arrive punctually for lessons.
• Students must phone in to report any absences as soon as possible so we can organise client sessions effectively.

Additional costs

• White salon tunic (purchased through college supplier approx cost £30) and black salon trousers, black shoes, long, black cardigan etc.
• Beauty therapy kit £60
• Textbooks (see course guide)
• Stationary, files, highlighter pens, plastic wallets etc.

Assessment
Continual assessment through a combination of practical salon sessions, end tests, oral questions, assignments and a portfolio of evidence.

Progression
This course will prepare you for entry into employment or for further study such as NVQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy. If you wish to progress onto the NVQ 2 you will be interviewed again and must have achieved an NVQ1 and key skills at level 1 by June. You must also have a good record of attendance, punctuality and act in a professional manner leading to good references from the staff.

Work Experience
Learners develop their skills in the beauty salons on campus and in local salons.
