What are the entry requirements?
You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills at interview. Induction is taken very seriously at this college. Learners will follow a five week induction programme where their suitability for the level and type of programme they are hoping to be on will be assessed. Successful completion of the induction period will confirm their place on a programme.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
  • Minimum Literacy Level: Level 1

  • Reading: You can read and understand the main points and ideas in different types of writing - for example magazine articles, newspaper stories or short stories. You can understand main ideas from a report, read from a website or college text book, etc. You can use what you have read to help you write an essay or make decisions. Writing: You can present information in different ways. You can use grammar, spelling and punctuation correctly. You can present your thoughts and ideas in a clear way that people can understand.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 1

  • Interpret Information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; read scales on familiar measuring equipment using everyday units; make accurate observations; identify suitable calculations to get the results you need for your task. Carry out calculations: You can add and subtract, with whole numbers and simple decimals, with or without a calculator; work to the level of accuracy you have been told to use; multiply and divide a simple decimal by a whole number with or without a calculator; understand and calculate simple fractions and percentages; work out the area and volum of rectangular-based shapes; use scale on diagrams; use ratio and proportion; find the average or mean of up to 10 items; find the range for up to 10 items.


What qualification will I receive?
NVQ Level 2 in Beauty Therapy.

Where can it lead?
It is generally accepted that to follow a career in beauty therapy you will need to have completed the NVQ Level 3 in Beauty Therapy. Level 3 Beauty Therapy involves advanced treatments and most salons will require both Level 2 and 3. Students who only achieve Level 2 may wish to follow other careers in make-up or advanced nail techniques.

What will I study?
You will learn basic techniques for carrying out a facial massage, mask application, make-up application, eye treatments, manicure and pedicure, hair removal, salon reception and health and safety.

How will I be taught?
You carry out treatments on the general public in the college beauty salon. Although this is a basic course there is still a certain amount of theory involved and students will be required to complete assignments at home.

How will I be assessed?
You will be carrying out treatments on the general public which are assessed by observation and oral questioning by your tutor. You will collect evidence to build a portfolio of work. You will be tested on theory through assignments and written tests.

Cross-college Careers Guidance staff are available to all students as are the language and study support staff.
