Aim This 1 year course aims to build on the knowledge and skills you developed in NVQ Level 2. Further studies may include the theory of beauty and body treatments, anatomy and physiology and salon management. You will also have practical experience of beauty therapy including artificial nails, electrical face and body treatments, hair removal by electrolysis and blend, body massage and aromatherapy.
Content Although this is a practical course with most of your time spent working in a salon environment you will be expected to complete written assignments and projects, undertake appropriate reading and compile a comprehensive portfolio of work.

This qualification consists of 3 core units:
· Health, safety and security
· Promoting services to clients
· Financial effectiveness of the business.

Plus 5 specialist units:
· Electrical epilation methods
· Head and body massage treatments
· Body conditioning using electro-therapy
· Face and skin conditioning using electro-therapy
· Application of self-tan using manual and mechanical methods.

Assessment is continuous throughout the course using a mixture of practical, oral and written methods. In order to achieve the full NVQ qualification all units must be successfully completed.

Progression/career opportunities
Successful completion of the course will enable you to apply for a range of jobs within the beauty industry and within a variety of settings such as beauty salons and spas; health and fitness clubs; health farms, cruise liners and airlines or freelance therapist. You may wish to progress to Higher Education including the Foundation Degree in Spa Management with a view to entering a management position.

Extra information You will need to buy a uniform and beauty therapy kit. At interview you will be given full details of where you can purchase your uniform and equipment at a competitive price. Your kit will form the basis of your professional work kit and may be used when taking your own clients.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
