Course programme
In small groups (maximum 3 people) we look at the properties of silver and its different types that it comes when we buy it. A good collection of modern jewellery books and pieces of the tutors own work are available for students to look at for inspiration for their piece. Discussion of the procedures needed to complete students pieces follows.
In the studio we familiarise ourselves with tools as demonstrations of the basic techniques are given. Students will then make their own piece of jewellery sawing, filing, texturing with hammers, punches, burrs. The tutor will demonstrate how to make jump rings from the small ones used to join chain or hang earrings to large links to form chain. Then students will be able to solder findings onto their pieces. The processes of cleaning and polishing the silver will be followed. Earwires, chains etc can be added and we can then admire our finished work.
Tea/coffee and biscuits freely available.
Handouts written by the tutor are available for students to take away including techniques, list of tools to set up workshop, scources of materials, magazines, websites etc.
Further Workshops are available for students who have become proficient in basic skills including the use aof a rolling mill, reticulation, Keum Boo etc.
