About this course

Basic Counselling Skills Level 2 or Certificate in Counselling Skills and/or experience in this area of work. Minimum age 23 years. All applicants will be asked to attend a short, informal interview prior to the course commencing. Candidates who have experienced a major bereavement in the last 2 years are unlikely to be accepted.

Course Overview
This course is designed for people who wish to become involved in bereavement counselling or, by nature of their primary role, are already involved in bereavement issues.

Course Structure
This is a 60 hour course with attendance on Monday, 6.30pm 9.30pm over 20 weeks to include individual tutorials.

The programme will cover the following topics:
  • Communication and Counselling Skills
  • Theory of Attachment/Separation,
  • Loss and Death
  • Development of Self-awareness
  • -Types- of Bereavement
  • Working with Bereaved Children
  • One evening will comprise a visit to/from an undertaker. There is some recommended course reading with a selection of books available from the Library.


Qualification Aims
Provide candidates with a supportive context to examine own personal development, & enhance self-awareness. It will provide a relevant knowledge base integrated with skills practice, so that client's purpose can be understood against an informed background, & will incorporate a person-centred approach to bereavement counselling. The qualification is aimed at enhancing primary roles such as professionals employed in education, welfare, health, social services or voluntary agencies, or those wishing to develop a bereavement role.

Assessments/Examinations
The course is assessed by a written bereavement article/case study of between 1,000 and 1,500 words + oral skills practice & written questionnaire.
