Course programme

This one-day course is designed to provide you with essential knowledge and understanding of the responsibilities of alcohol retailers authorised by a personal licence holder to sell alcohol. It will enable those who complete the qualification to act within the law to support the designated premises supervisor to retail alcohol responsibly on their licensed premises.

The BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing ("BIIAB Level 1 ARAR") provides additional protection to licensed premises operators and candidates alike as it contains three mandatory questions that ensure every candidate fully understands the legislation concerning underage sales, serving persons who are drunk, and the licensing objectives.

Who should attend

Anyone in England, Wales or Northern Ireland who works on licensed premises who is, or is likely to be, involved in the sale of alcohol (in any licensed premises) including:

  • bar staff
  • waiters/waitresses
  • supermarket cashiers
  • licensed shop cashiers

Course Content

The BIIAB Level 1 ARAR covers the following topics:

  • The nature of alcohol and the effect that it has on the human body
  • The main issues in the Licensing Act 2003 as they relate to alcohol retailers and servers
  • Licensing law in relation to the protection of children from harm
  • The social responsibilities relating to the retail sale of alcohol
  • How to recognise drunkeness, and your duty not to serve drunk customers
  • Appropriate strategies that can be adopted to prevent or eliminate alcohol-related crime and conflict and the importance of personal safety

Preparation

Once your booking has been confirmed you will be sent a BIIAB Level 1 ARAR course handbook. The course handbook is written in an easy-to-follow format and contains all the information that will form the subject of the course and upon which you will be assessed. You should therefore ensure that you spend sufficient time reading through the course handbook before attending the course as this will greatly increase your understanding of the topics that will be covered and the chances of you passing the examination.

Course format

The course will take the form of teaching, discussions, and tests.

Assessment

One multiple-choice examination with 25 questions (comprised in two sections), three of which are compulsory. To pass the examination, candidates must correctly answer the three compulsory questions in section one and 14 out of 22 in section two.

Assessment Result

On passing the examination you will be awarded a BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing qualification. You will receive your Award Certificate approximately one to two weeks after you pass the examination.

If you are unsuccessful in the examination you may re-sit the examination (only once) at a cost of £35. The re-sit booking must be made within four weeks of the date of the first attempt at the examination.
