About this course
Artist/Musician Development courses require no formal qualifications although musicians should have a developed sense of their artistic or musical profile. The main criteria are that the musician must have a clear focus on their career and the areas it may develop in. A good understanding their music and its place within the UK market will be required and a willingness to engage in the full nature of the courses is essential.

Course programme
INTRODUCTION
The Artist Development course is an exciting and unique initiative in the field of popular music training. Its purpose is to generate skills in empowering artists and musicians to develop their artistic profile or brand over a specific period. This is a vital skill in a music industry which is largely turning its back on traditional A&R (Artist & Repertoire) development.
The focus of the courses is on the artist (solo singer/songwriter, band, composer or producer) or on the freelance jobbing musician.
The ethos is one of open forum and ongoing feedback and evaluation. Feedback is provided by the team of experienced tutors and by visiting professionals. This enables input to be relevant and realistic.
TARGET MARKET
There are three types of artist or musician who can benefit from this course:
1. SOLO & ENSEMBLE ARTISTS
This category includes solo singer/songwriters as well as duos and ensemble bands. Most artists in this category are likely to be composing their own repertoire with an aim to exploit this during their development process. Most, if not all, artists in this category should be able to undertake recorded and live performance.
2. COMPOSER/PRODUCER
This category includes composers who do not undertake conventional live performance and are writing music either using Digital Audio Workstations, or for performance by other musicians.
3. FREELANCE MUSICIAN
This category includes musicians whose primary indentified role is to provide instrumental or vocal support to another artist. Artist development in this case will not centre on the development of creative repertoire, but rather on other aspects of the process as relevant to the individual musician.
STRUCTURE & DELIVERY
Artist Development course is available as a one-year courses at Level 4. Although the ethos of the courses is the same, the structure and delivery differ according to level.
LEVEL 4
The Level 4 Artist/Musician Development course is based around the further development and management of the artistic/musician brand allied to a deeper contextual understanding. It is assessed via a Rockschool/ATM Diploma.
The structure of the Level 4 course is outlined below:
A. ASSESSMENT
To assess the process of deconstructing and rebuilding the artist/musician brand (individual or ensemble) in terms of theoretical analysis, contextual relationships, repertoire, image, fanbase/client development, marketing and promotion, merchandise etc. This
process will be done individually and in consultation with peers, tutors and industry representatives.
B. DEVELOPMENT
To assess the actions instigated as a result of the Assessment process. These will generate the principal artefacts of the development process such as a set of recorded repertoire (final or demo), a video of live performances, evidence of a tour, a set of branded merchandise, an artist/musician website, evidence of contracts with third parties (e.g. management, publishing etc.), photo-shoot, promotional video, an instrumental skills qualification etc.
C. PRESENTATION
To showcase of the results of the Development process via a public show/presentation together with in depth research into reactions to the showcase.
D. RE-EVALUATION
Based on the outcomes of the research, to re-evaluate the artist/musician brand in preparation for the next phase of career development.
WORK-RELATED LEARNING & GUEST SPEAKERS
Artist/Musician Development courses are learner-led and artists/musicians are expected to generate workrelated learning opportunities within the industry. London is an ideal environment for such activity which might include gigs, recording sessions, promotional campaigns.
Allied to the core team of professional staff is a strong team of guest speakers who provide input from different areas of the industry. Such diverse and informed input is essential for this type of qualification. Representatives might include artists, managers, publishers, promoters, record company A&R, distributors, marketing people, merchandisers, designers, film/video makers.
APPLICATION & INTERVIEW
Musicians who apply will be asked to an audition/interview where they will have to perform, or demonstrate, their music as well as contextualising their artist brand and repertoire.
