Course Overview

Evidence suggests that we are currently living in the midst of a global biodiversity crisis. Species extinction is occurring at a higher rate than at any time in evolutionary history, primarily as a result of human activity. The conservation of biodiversity is therefore one of the major environmental challenges currently facing humanity.

As pressures on the natural environment intensify, there is a growing need for skilled professionals in the areas of biodiversity conservation and environmental management. Increasingly, such professionals need to possess a wide range of skills, including biodiversity assessment, site survey, site management, environmental monitoring, spatial information systems and information technology, as well as knowledge of relevant ecological principles and regulatory frameworks. They must also be able communicate effectively at all levels with a range of different stakeholders, from government agencies and professional bodies to local interest groups and members of the public. This course is designed to equip both recent graduates and experienced practitioners with these skills.

Bournemouth University is exceptionally well located for learning about environmental conservation and management. Situated on the Dorset coast, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bournemouth lies within easy reach of outstanding environments of global importance for conservation, including the Wessex Downs, the Dorset heaths, Poole Harbour and the New Forest. Dorset is one of the most diverse counties in Britain for many groups of organisms, including plants, reptiles, insects and birds, and provides outstanding opportunities for field-based learning. The staff at Bournemouth have an international profile in conservation ecology, including current research projects in Spain, France, Crete, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Uganda, as well as in the UK.

The Centre for Conservation Ecology & Environmental Change has established a wide variety of collaborative links with organisations including the National Trust, Dorset Wildlife Trust, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, British Trust for Ornithology, Natural England, RBG Kew, and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology. International partners with whom the Centre has formal links include the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre, Fauna and Flora International, Birdlife International and the IUCN Species Survival Commission.
