What Will I Learn On This Course?

You will gain a good knowledge of the ways in which molecules and cells function within whole organisms and will develop an understanding of some of the important issues that confront our society today. You will also develop skills including :-

· data collection and its evaluation
· investigation of facts and how to use deduction, and,
· how to put over your own point of view effectively.

You will also need to use ICT and to develop competence in basic statistical techniques.

Course Content And Method Of Assessment

AS level Biology is a one year course. All Biology students sit the AS level exam which consists of three units.

Unit 1 Biology and Disease
In this unit you will look at how digestive and gas exchange systems may be affected by diseases and how a knowledge of biology allows us to understand the symptoms of disease and interpret data relating to risk factors.

Unit 2 The Variety of Living Organisms
Here you will study factors that influence variation between species and how this variety is reflected in similarities and differences in biochemistry and cellular organisation. This leads to a consideration of how size and metabolic rate affect an organism's requirements and give rise to adaptations.

Unit 3 Practical and Investigative skills assessed in the context of units 1 and 2.

A2 Biology requires a second year of study and builds on AS Biology. It also consists of three units.

Unit 4 Populations and Environment
This unit requires a study of how living organisms form ecosystems, how human activity affects ecosystems and how new species form.

Unit 5 Control in Cells and in Organisms
Included is this unit is the biology of the nervous and endocrine systems, homeostasis, genes and genetic expression.

Unit 6 Practical and Investigative skills assessed in the context of units 4 and 5.

After The Course

Biology is one of the most popular A level subjects in the country and attracts students studying a wide range of other subjects. Many of the students enjoy it so much that over 50% of students gaining A2 level progress onto courses in Biological Sciences or Health Studies/Medicine. Others go on into careers in Law, Computing, Accounting or Teaching. If you decide to move directly into employment, you will find biology a rewarding and challenging course which will develop many of the skills essential for a successful career.

Subject Combinations

The wide and topical subject content of this course makes it suitable for Science students and for students who are looking for a broad education. Success in AS Biology can lead to A2 Biology, which includes the study of Ecology and requires participation in a field trip.
