The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science Top-up route has been designed to meet the needs of individuals who are working or who are considering working in an NHS pathology laboratory but do not posses an accredited Biomedical Science degree. In a situation such as this, prior contact with the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and assessment of the current degree content should be undertaken to reveal if any additional study is required before the holders degree can be recognised. If additional study is required this may often include some or all of the specialist modules such as haematology, cellular pathology or clinical biochemistry. The top-up route allows all the required modules identified by the IBMS to be studied on a part-time basis. Once completed the original degree can be accredited by the professional body.
All modules that make up the routes through the Biomedical Science course have been accredited by the IBMS - this is essential for employment in hospital pathology laboratories. Current figures suggest that approximately 60 per cent of our full time graduates go on to build careers in the NHS.
