Course programme
Aimed at the beginner to intermediate student wishing to learn and develop the core skills and processes required to become a confident and efficient smith.
This 1 full day a week course running for 12 weeks, aims to develop the core forging skills and processes required to enable progress to hand crafted items. To equip the learner with a sound understanding and skill level in the foundation techniques of blacksmithing.
The course has been developed to provide learners with a solid base on which to grow and develop there forging and making skills. There is also the opportunity for those wishing to take the Level 2 forging test to use this course to polish off their forging and making skills if individual skill level and experience is sufficient for the 12 week time frame.

·Hot cutting
·Forge Welding
·Punching
The delivery of these skills will be through tool making and other decorative items.
What qualifications will I get?Warwickshire College certificate of attendance
How will I be assessed?There is no formal assessment at the end of the course; although upon completion you will receive a Warwickshire College certificate of attendance.
If your skill level and experience is sufficient you may wish to use the course to polish off your forging and making skills in preparation for the level 2 forging test.

What are the entry requirements?Minimum qualifications: Not applicable
There are no formal entry requirements although a practical aptitude would be advantageous.
What else do I need to know?The course trainer will be Steve Rook, a master blacksmith with over 30 years’ experience and silver medal holder with the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths.
Steve creates one off forged metal work commissions, for private and public clients, using traditional and modern techniques.
Steve has exhibited and demonstrated at a number of world renowned shows, he also judges for the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths and has an active role in the British Artist Blacksmith Association. He has a wealth of knowledge and high attention to detail which has enabled him to earn the title of being one of the best blacksmiths in the UK.
Equipment required:
Steel toecap work boots or strong protective footware
Leather apron or non-synthetic fabric overall.
Safety Glasses
Ear protection in the form of ear defenders or ear plugs
Chrome leather gloves
Personal First Aid Kit
What can I do after this course?Completion of this course can lead to further exploration of forging techniques and other full time training courses.
