Our team member Tanya has been blogging about all types of pregnancy questions that she has been facing during the first months of her current pregnancy. We get to follow her during her journey while she shares advices, concerns and experiences that many soon to be mothers could benefit from reading.

In her post about being 4 months pregnant she shared with us her desire of having a girl. Let’s see what she shares this time!

Boy or Girl?

It’s a GIRL!!! So incredibly excited yet so scared at the same time. The great news is that she is HEALTHY and that is just want I wanted to hear. Unfortunately some of my fellow mom’s on the birth boards have had preterm labor or lost their LO’s (Little ones). And even with today’s technology, prior to 22 weeks is just not long enough for these babies to survive.
We all anxiously await the blessed 24 week mark which signals “viability” but that is not to say a baby born prior to 24 weeks won’t survive, nor does it mean babies born after 24 weeks are guaranteed to live. It just means the chances start going up.
I was a preemie born at 27 weeks, which 30+ years ago that was almost the cut off. So you never know.
So now that I know I am having a little girl, it is time to start planning the nursery.
Turns out that if I want to borrow a crib more than 1 year old, or even use a hand me down, it is now illegal for that person to lend or sell me their crib. A new law recently went into affect banning all DROP SIDE cribs. I had a drop side crib with my son… and let me tell you it was godsend.
He was a hefty baby and I did not like reaching down to get him. Unfortunately starting this year, it is now illegal to own a drop side crib due to the danger it poses to a baby should it drop unexpectedly. So much for convenience…however this is the most significant law in child safety to be passed in many years.
Speaking of cribs and sleeping, a long time ago doctors insisted that babies sleep face down, in case they were to spit up, so that they did not choke on their own vomit. I was raised sleeping face down. In my son’s era you had 2 choices, on your side, or face up. I even bought a cushion that was built to hold them either on their side or face up. Now the recommendation is only face up. This advice has reduced the incidence of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) by 50% in the last 20 years. So doctor does know best.

Pregnant women on diets

And the most pressing issue to date is WEIGHT GAIN. I am over halfway through my pregnancy and have gained 9 kilos (or 19.8 pounds). Those that know me know I do eat pretty well, but unfortunately I gain weight easily. I’ve been speaking with fellow pregnant mommies whose doctors have already lectured and threatened diets! Yes diets!!! Amazing, we are busy growing a NEW HUMAN BEING and the focus is on weight. If your blood results are normal, your blood pressure is normal, your sugar level is normal, and you are eating a varied diet, there is technically no medical reason to track a pregnant woman’s weight gain. Doctors need to step out of the middle ages and just let go of the weight issue. So knock it off! We know all too well how much we’ve gained and how fat and bloated most of us feel. We DO NOT need a reminder. Baby is hungry! And we’re hormonal. So back off 🙂
My homework: need to sign up for a parenting class. And decide on a NAME.
Any suggestions?
