Some people think that personal communication begins and ends with the spoken word- this could not be further from the truth!

Would it surprise you to learn that verbal communication comprises only 7% of communication? It’s a fact.

The remaining 93% is made up of our facial expressions, body language and the signals we give via what we wear and the gestures we make.

Improving upon our nonverbal communication can help us achieve our objectives. With that in mind, I would like to welcome you to the world of nonverbal communication! Hidden within these 2 words is the key to more efficient personal communication.

Even when we are silent, we are transmitting signals which others receive and which, ultimately, determine how we are viewed.

One of the biggest problems is that WHAT is said is often unaccompanied by HOW it is said. In other words, verbal communication alone, without its accompanying nonverbal component is often unclear and inefficient. In other words, it is essentially ineffective.

Check out the following example:

Imagine that someone goes to an event with the specific goal of raising funds for charity. This person wants to give the impression that he or she is honest and forthright, but the way the person is dressed and how the person is acting is subdued and distant. Do you think it will be easy for this person to secure the funding for his or her charity?

Being conscious of your nonverbal communication direct impacts not just your personal communication but also your professional communication. When HOW someone is saying something coincides with WHAT it is being said, that person is communicating at a superior level and is more likely to achieve his or her objectives.

Now, more than ever, we need to present the best version of ourselves. This “best version” necessarily implicates the use of effective verbal and nonverbal communication in order to express our wishes and achieve our objectives.
