Course programme

Boat Building Maintenance & Support
The 38-week Long Course commences with a 6-week Joinery Foundation Course after which the syllabus covers the following skill areas:

  • Lofting

  • Traditional Boatbuilding

  • Modern Wooden Boatbuilding

  • Fibre Reinforced Plastic Boatbuilding and Fit Out

  • Yacht Joinery

  • Spar and Oar Making

  • Engine Beds and Stern Tubes

  • Finishing Coatings and Compounds

  • Rigging, Chandlery and Cordage

The skills learned are further developed and practised by working on the boats that are lofted out and built during the course. These boats are chosen to provide the optimum training value for students.

    Build your own boat.

The opportunity to build their own boat does not suit everyone, as some will prefer to concentrate on optimising their skills development; tutors will discuss the pros and cons with individuals on arrival. Our recent experience is that about half the students take up the opportunity to build an own boat, which is ideal, as it requires around two students per boat to complete a construction during the course. The choice of design is agreed in the early days of the course and must be consistent with training objectives. All students will rotate around the boats under construction to gain breadth of experience in boatbuilding techniques.

Please note. Places on the 38-week Long Course are limited to maintain the optimum staff to student ratio: early booking is recommended.

    On Boat Building Academy

    Provider description
Practical, professional or purely for pleasure - come and learn boatbuilding, woodworking, or a variety of skills at the Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis. Our boat building training courses are ‘hands-on’, taught by experts and vary in length from 1 day to 38 weeks. 38 week course in Boat Building, Maintenance and Support, City & Guilds Level III. Teaching students to build boats to professional standards and offering some students the opportunity to build their own boats as part of the course. Now offering an eight week woodworking course. Based on the same philosophy as our boat building training, the course is intensive, 90% practical and City & Guilds certificated (but with a far wider syllabus). Because it is an 8 week course students minimise expense and loss of earnings while learning advanced skills in the shortest possible time. If you want to change career, learn a new skill, take a sabbatical doing something completely different, need to sharpen your existing skills, have retired and can now do all the things you want to do...or if you just like wood...then we might have the course for you. Range of 1-5 day short courses from Basic Woodwork to Wooden Boat Restoration and from Sail Making to Diesel Engines.
