About this course

This flagship course provides students with the skills needed to find jobs in the marine industry or to establish themselves as boat builders in their own right, though some students join for a sabbatical or on retirement and have no plans to work in the marine industry.

There is no upper age limit and the course caters for those changing career (at whatever age) as well as the school leaver. You do not need woodworking skills in order to apply, everyone starts from the same point - the beginning.

A mature attitude, motivation and above all a clear enthusiasm and willingness to pursue the highest standards are our only prerequisites for successful entry. We assess each applicant's suitability and potential.

City & Guilds (2463) level 3 diploma in Marine Construction, Systems Engineering and Maintenance

The course is intensive and calls for a high level of commitment. We therefore ask potential students to visit the Academy in order to talk to Instructors, meet current students, see the boats that are being built and discuss what they hope for from the course and beyond. The process takes between two and three hours. In exceptional circumstances, if people are unable to visit, we will conduct a telephone interview.

Course programme

The 40-week course incorporates the Level 3 Diploma in Boatbuilding (Advanced) (2473-03). The syllabus goes far beyond the requirements of the City & Guilds qualification, providing comprehensive practical instruction in traditional and contemporary boat building construction methods and composite materials and related skills.

The ‘long’ course commences with a six-week joinery foundation course. Once people have their joinery skills in place the syllabus covers the following skill areas:

  • Lofting
  • Traditional boatbuilding
  • Modern wooden boatbuilding
  • Fibre reinforced plastics
  • Fit out
  • Yacht joinery
  • Spar and oar making
  • Engine beds and stern tubes
  • Painting and finishing
  • Rigging, chandlery, and cordage
  • Sail making and repair
  • Marine systems (Five days at Rob Perry Marine, a marine engineering company ten minutes from the Academy. An RYA ‘Diesel Engine’ certificate and Rob Perry Marine certificate are awarded at the successful conclusion of the week).

Groups move from the upstairs workshop and become the ‘downstairs’ group in the main workshop after five months. It is at this stage that they start building their group boats.
