Ben Orford
Tutor
Ben Orford completed a three year coppicing, green woodwork and chair making apprenticeship with us in Clissett Wood in 1999. He soon added bowl turning and tool making to his impressive portfolio and has since built an enviable reputation as a highly accomplished bowl turner, tool maker and teacher.
Course programme
This five day course provides a rare opportunity to learn bowl turning skills in some depth. Tutor Ben Orford will share his specialist knowledge of bowl turning and tool making, starting with the construction of a Viking style lathe. You have the opportunity to build your own bowl lathe using sawn and cleft timber and Ben's hand forged hard ware. For the remaining three days you will learn the range of skills involved in bowl and platter turning under Ben's expert tuition. One of these days can be spent learning the basic tool forging skills. There is a materials charge for the pole lathe and for the specialist metal work.
Start Time: 10:00 am
We offer eight camping pitches among the trees in the camping area for your own tent.
Our four greenwood shelters provide a private sleeping base for singles, couples or friends sharing. The shelters provide a pallet base and a good quality mattress inside. They can not be shut completely or locked.
For shelters and tents you will need to bring your own bedding such as sleeping bags, sheets, pillows, duvets, hot water bottles etc.depending on the time of year.
Also on site are a combined wash and shower room with running water and a well designed compost toilet along the track.
All cooking is wood fired; we have two open raised cooking fires which can be used to barbecue as well as general cooking and a wood fired clay oven for roasting and baking.
Evenings are often spent sitting around a camp fire under the stars.
