Tools and materials
Reading and interpreting architects plans – building to plan
Constructing footings and understanding insulation requirements
Materials, and estimating requirements for a project
Foundations and their requirements
Setting a bed of mortar and laying bricks to a level and gauge
Garden gate posts, chimney stacks, archways and/or manhole construction
Setting out from foundation for a small building working from corners into Stretcher bond brickwork
Keying into existing walls, maintaining levels, pointing and finishing
The advanced course was designed to provide bricklayers with experience full week of hands on bricklaying working on a number of complex projects all aimed at building trowel skills and speed. The emphasis throughout this course is building on speed and maintaining quality of work. The essential theory work is integrated as part of the practical aspects of bricklaying which includes the skills of swinging a trowel to re-pointing a wall.
The first day establishes your skills and includes laying a bed of mortar in continuous standard Thickness the quickly moving onto laying a line of bricks onto this mortar bed leveled and standard gauged.
Once the instructor has established your competence in use of the trowel and the principles of marking out, mixing mortar and laying bricks, you quickly move onto advanced work relative to you skill and experience.
There will be lots of opportunity to practice all aspects of bricklaying including cavity wall construction, lintel installation, and some basic artistic brick bonding.
