Bridging Courses to A levels in Humanities and Social Sciences
If you have just missed out on gaining enough A*-C grades to take up a full AS level programme this year, then this course is designed to enable students to progress to AS levels in humanities and social science subjects after one further year of study. You will study a combination of GCSE subjects (most of which will be new to you) and you may be able to take one AS subject. The most exciting aspect of the programme however will be the level 3 taster course which will also lead to a further qualification.

What will I be doing?
GCSEs (At least 3 including English and/or Maths if necessary so that you end up with five A*-C passes overall). In addition to Maths and English, if required, students will choose from a range of Humanities based and other GCSEs. Availability will be subject to demand. These may include:
  • Sociology
  • Psychology
  • Humanities
  • Media Studies
  • Biology
  • Turkish
  • Spanish
  • The Humanities Level 3 taster course Based around the traditional academic disciplines of law, sociology, history and politics, the programme will be designed around students†personal and cultural interests. This course will help you develop the background knowledge and skills you need to progress to full AS level study the following year. You will improve your general study skills and your key skills in communication through structuring and producing extended writing, preparing and delivering presentations and carrying out research using books, newspaper articles, journal articles and internet resources. You will also develop your skills in answering exam questions effectively.
Provided you already have at least 3 A*-C GCSEs including Maths and English you may also be able to study:
  • One AS level chosen from Sociology, Law, Politics, History, Geography or World Development

How will I be assessed?
The main exams will be in June. You may also have to complete coursework for some subjects.

Where can I go after completing the course?
On completion you will be able to progress to AS levels in humanities and social sciences. You may also be able to take AS levels from other faculties if you have the right qualifications.
