Aims:
To develop an ability to communicate with deaf people using British Sign Language in a range of familiar contexts, participating in longer and more open-ended exchanges than at Level 2.

Duration:
38 weeks Commencing January 2010

Content:
By the end of the course candidates should be able to:
The Content is divided into two units, each of which can be achieved separately.
By the end of the course learners should be able to:
- Demontrate BSL competence at an advanced level
- Broaden and apply BSL skills in a range of situations (communication, discussion, debate, presentation skills etc) and contexts (socially, in the workplace etc)
- Demonstrate an understanding of BSL in different situations with different people
- Communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in BSL using increasingly accurate, complex and varied language
- Demonstrate increased knowledge of the grammatic structure and variation within BSL
- Demonstrate insights into and contact with the Deaf Community
Content:
Receptive Skills
- relating to issues and concerns in social or work-related contexts; including following uncomplicated negotiations, and understanding the main point of interviews, doucmentaries and most social conversation
Productive Skills
- Productive skills relating to issues and concerns in social or work-related contexts in cluding following uncomplicated negotiations, exchanging and presenting information.
Assessment
Candidates will provide evidence for both units of their ability to use BSL by compiling a portfolio of evidence drawn from the themes of study.
The portfolio will include written and video / DVD evidence.
