Who is this course for?
This two-year course is for anyone interested in developing their existing BSL skills to communicate with deaf people more confidently. The course will provide learners with basic information about deaf people, the deaf community, deaf culture and the history of BSL. The course offers learners the opportunity to incorporate BSL grammar at greater depth. In year two you will develop your exisiting BSL skills to a higher level and the course will provide further information about deaf people today, the richness of deaf community history and its culture. Anyone working with deaf people on a daily basis or who are deaf themselves are advised to take this course.

What will I learn?
In the first year of the course (Intermediate A) the following topics will be covered: Term One (Unit 1) - you will learn to give information, ask about organising an event and care of pets. You will recognise the various ways of how to buy and sell houses, exchange information and express opinions about magazines, TV and films. You will also learn about domestic bills, personal diaries and life events using personal timelines, discuss daily current affairs and express personal opinions. Term Two (Unit 2) - you will learn to give information and ask about personal experiences at school, work and college, discuss the location of things at home and at work, share holiday experiences, discuss fashion, share information about financial issues and express concerns about the environment and current affairs. Term Three (Unit 3) - you will learn to give information, and ask about deaf people in the last 200 years, deaf people in the media and service provision in the deaf commuity, deaf people in the past who have achieved things for deaf people today and how to deliver BSL presentation skills.In the second year of the course (Intermediate B) you will cover the following topics: Term One (Unit 4) - You will learn to give information and ask about redecorating and renovation around the house, discuss your hobbies and interests, share information about your daily routine, using transport, discuss exchanging and refunding various items, share new ideas with food and drink, discuss environmental issues such as global warming and natural disasters, disucss health issues including reporting accidents and theft. You will demonstrate the ability to express opinions and information. Term Two (Unit 5) - you will learn to give information, and ask, about deaf people in society, barriers in deaf peoples' lives at home, work and with using transport, work place opportunities, ownership of BSL, technology and deaf people today, you will research a deaf person's life and demonstrate a simple deaf joke. This unit also includes discussing current affairs and expressing personal opinions. Term Three (Unit 6) - You will learn to express personal opinions on how you would run your country if given the chance, discuss personal aims/ambitions, express comparisons and learn about deaf magazines, current issues and presenting skills on general and deaf issues and giving facts.

Assessment
Examinations are undertaken by examiners approved by the IBSL (Institute of British Sign Language ) and is a two-part examination. Part A is conversation topics and this will comprise of a brief introduction, then the examiner will ask the learner which one of three topics s/he has chosen for the conversation. The conversation will be a two-way discussion and will last approximately four minutes. Part B is presentation and discussion topics; the presentation should take approximately two - three minutes, and the discussion with the examiner that follows will take up the remaining two - three minutes.

On Completion Achievement / Progression
Learners who successfully complete the BSLA Intermediate course can progress to the BSLA Advanced Level.

Requirement
Learners who have obtained the BSLA Foundation in BSL skills can progress to this course. Learners should be competent in the use of English. You should have access to video/DVD for private study at home as a number of videos/DVDs are used to assist with learning. You must meet deaf people at deaf clubs/work or weekend events. However we accept those who passed level one CACDP/Signature in less than 6 months or those who are actively in contact with deaf people on a regular basis and passed level one more than 6 months ago. To apply for this course starting in September 2010 please complete a college application form and return it to the college. We will invite you to attend an interview plus a literacy and numeracy assessement from January 2010.
