About this course
No formal entry requirements are necessary, however, a commitment to attend all classes and to practice skills learnt is vital. Students must attaned the deaf club once or twice a month and are expected to do homework.

Introduction:
This qualification is designed to enable learners to communicate with deaf people in British Sign Language on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use.Please note that this course was formerly known as BSL (British Sign Language) Stage 1.
Study Mode & Location:
This 17 week part-time course lasts for 3 hours per week and will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.
Course Content:
The course is highly interactive and will provide many situations where you can practice and develop the language skills. You will study the following three units:
- Unit 101 is an introduction to BSL.
- Unit 102 is conversational BSL.
- Unit 103 is BSL at school, college or work.
These three units will cover sign vocabulary linked to certain topics, eg family, appearance, clothes, colours, size, sport, interests, animals, family, prepositions and pronouns, numbers, money, time, age, careers, weather, transport, emotions, places, countries, cities, buildings, directions, furniture, food and useful conversational vocabulary, and how to converse in sign at an introductory level. You will also learn about British Sign Language (BSL) grammatical features, eg directional verbs, multi-channel signs, signs in context, timelines, role shift, classifiers, non-manual features, placement, modification, BSL syntax, question forms, location, affirmation and negation.
Assessment:
Assessment will be as follows:
- Unit 101 - This unit is internally assessed by your tutor using an assessment checklist. It is video recorded for external moderation by Signature.
- Units 102 & 103 - At the end of each unit a conversation between you and your tutor will be video recorded and sent to Signature for external assessment.
Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this course allows progression to the Signature Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language (subject to interview).
Additional Costs:
Deaf Awareness is an optional addition to British Sign Language Level 1. The fee for the Signature Certificate in Developing Awareness & Communication with Deaf & Deafblind People is currently £67.
How To Apply
You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
