Entry RequirementsThese are flexible and aimed at providing the widest possible opportunity for well motivated students. Although no formal qualifcations are requireed you must be able to demonstrate motivation and the ability to succeed which will normally be assessed at interview.
Applicants are likely to be from one of the following categories;·Mature students (over 21) without formal qualifications but with experience and motivation that indicates likely success with the course.
·Students with the equivalent of five GCSE passes or BTEC First Certificate who have had further training or suitable work experience which suggests they have the ability to succeed with the course.
·Students who are formally qualified for University entrance in other areas of study but who are seeking a change of academic direction.
·Students who have under performed at GCSE 'A' Level or BTEC National Certificate but whose earlier academic profiles suggest that they have the potential to succeed with the course.
Course Content
To aid the study of other subjects a core module of Communications Study Skills and basic mathematics is studied throughout the year.
In the first semester (16 weeks) five introductory modules are studied:·Living World
·Chemistry
·Technology and Computing

In the second semester (16 weeks) three modules are studied selected from:·Biology
·Chemistry
·Mathematics

How will I be assessed?
Assessment will be by coursework and final examination Coursework can take a variety of forms such as essays, practical reports, projects.
What can I do next?
If you successfully complete this first year you can progress to a degree within the School of Applied Sciences combining two of three subjects such as Biochemistry, Environmental Science and Biomedical Science. Alternatively, you can progress to any single subject degree in;·The School of Applied Science
·The School of Health Sciences (except Psychology)
Additional costs
Students on this extended degree course will be eligible throughout their four years of study for the same financial terms for themselves and their dependants as students on three year courses.
