The literacy courses are for beginners and for those who want to improve their skills. Courses range from Entry Level 1 to Level 2. All courses are accredited and students work towards a range of nationally recognised qualifications. Courses at Level 1 and Level 2 develop skills needed for progression onto higher education or vocational training courses.

Who is this course for? The course is for adults aged 19 or over.

What do I need to get on the course? No formal qualifications are required.

What will I study? The courses offer a broad curriculum and are based on the Adult Literacy Core Curriculum. Students are encouraged to develop their reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar skills. Speaking and Listening skills development is included. Closely linked is the development of self-confidence, motivation and employability skills.
The subjects / topics which provide the context for the development of literacy skills are lively, useful and relevant. At higher levels the focus moves on to include preparation for further academic study or vocational training. Courses include progression and careers education. Guidance sessions are available.

What qualification will I get? The qualifications are various. The main qualifications are OCR Entry Level Certificate in Adult Literacy, City and Guilds National Test in Adult Literacy and GCSE English.

How do I get on the course? Come in to the Centre for Lifelong Learning, 28-42 Blackstock Road, Finsbury Park N4 to a drop-in session Thursdays 1.30-3.30pm from 20 September to 22 November (except half-term 25 October).

How much does the course cost? Courses are free for UK residents who have been in the country for at least 3 years. Level 2 GCSE students pay a fee (Concessions available).
