Applicants for the beginners language route are not required to have any previous experience of language learning but we would anticipate that applicants receiving an offer would demonstrate a clear commitment to studying languages via the AS Personal Statement. Applicants with GCSE languages are welcome to apply for the ab initio programmes. Applicants with AS would normally be interviewed and may receive an offer for the ab initio programme or for the post A-Level programme depending on the level of language demonstrated at interview.

We will therefore consider applicants with predicted grades that fall below these entry requirements if the application is of a high standard. IB: 32-33 points in the IB diploma including TOK/Bonus points. Standard level Maths and English 5 required. Higher level German 6 required if German is studied as part of the IB.
Access: Pass Access to HE Diploma with Merit in each module. Humanities or Social Sciences Access course preferred, but other courses considered on an individual basis. Applicants may be asked to attend an interview prior to an offer being made.
BTEC: National Extended Diploma - DDD. Mix of Diploma/ Subsidiary Diploma/A-levels acceptable.

Our innovative English Literature degree aims to cover the breadth and depth of English Literature across the world, whilst also allowing you to develop your own interests in specific areas. As an English student, you will study literature, culture, history, have the opportunity to develop your creative writing skills and investigate how new technologies impact upon the study of literature. Your First Year of studying English Literature at Aston will give you a broad introduction to literary genres and periods from the seventeenth century to the present day. In the Second Year you build upon the themes introduced in your First Year through the study of core and elective modules designed to broaden your understanding of the breadth and range of English literature and equip you to critically engage with a variety of literary texts across both literary genres and periods. In the Final Year you can choose from a wide range of elective modules to suit your interests.

By the end of our programme you will be able to work effectively in a professional German-speaking environment. Our focus is on the practical application of a range of skills within their wider context. Your linguistic skills will reach near-native proficiency, acquired through a combination of up-to-date modules and a well structured and supervised year abroad. You will also acquire transferable skills such as teamwork and independent research. These will be essential for any of the career choices the course will open up for you. Teaching is conducted in a stimulating environment by internationally renowned experts in their field. Almost all courses are taught in German and provide in-depth insights into current affairs. Subject specialisms include German society, film studies, socio-linguistics, translation studies, popular culture, literature, history and politics, and business studies.

You will also have the opportunity to produce a substantial piece of individual work in the form of a dissertation on an agreed topic of your choice.
