The Learning in the Workplace semester, visiting guest lectures, placement opportunities and consultancy project enhance your future employability.You learn from current developments in tourism and hospitality, often including your lecturers' research. You also develop your own research skills as you progress from academic reading and writing in the first year to designing, conducting, presenting and reflecting on your own research in the final year.

Applied learning

Work placements

You will have the opportunity to undertake a year-long work placement in your third year of study. This gives you a real-world experience to prepare you for your future career.Recent placements have included Disneyland in Florida, hotels and resorts across America, Canada, Spain, France, Dubai and the Maldives, and with national and regional destination management organisations such as the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions, the Isle of Man Department of Tourism, and Visit Peak District and Derbyshire, as well as for major tour operators such as TUI and Sunvil.You can also complete a 'Learning in the Workplace' semester where you work and study at the same time, with academic lessons carried out remotely during allocated study periods while on placement.

Networking opportunities

You will frequently engage with tourism and hospitality industry stakeholders throughout the course. Many modules include industry guest speakers and you will benefit from a close relationship with the industry through our staff members' industry network, association with the Tourism Management Institute, and alumni network.
