Introduction
This course provides a unique combination of academic study with hands-on training and experience in animal management. Students have daily contact with animals in our fully licensed zoo and study is split between Reaseheath and the University of Chester. The Chester campus offers all the research facilities of a modern university. Here you will explore the more academic understanding of animal management issues gained through practical experience at Reaseheath. Work in the field will expand your knowledge of animal behaviour and there is an opportunity for dissertation work in the final year, which allows you to work on research projects in animal management. You will benefit from our on-site laboratory facilities. You will also have the opportunity for off-site visits and international study tours.

Course structure:
Year 1 develops essential knowledge and skills and modules may include:

• Applied ethology
  
• Applied learning theory - to training animals
  
• Animal welfare issues
  
• Communication skills - working with clients
  
• Husbandry and handling - handling skills and enclosure design for mammals
  
• Observational skills and data handling
  
• Physiology and genetics of behaviour
  
• Zoos and conservation
  

Years 2 and 3 shift to more research-informed study and specialist modules may include:

• Animal health and disease

• Principles of enclosure design and enrichment

Requirement
A minimum of 140-160 UCAS points which must be obtained from GCE A Levels, including a Grade C in Biology, Chemistry, Human Biology or Applied Science BTEC National Diploma/Certificate in Animal Care, Animal Management or Science: merit/pass profile OCR National Diploma/Extended Diploma Irish / Scottish 4 Highers at grades CCDD including Biology, Chemistry or Human Biology Advanced GNVQ QAA recognised Access to HE Diploma (Science), Open College Units or Open University Credits in Biology-related subject For mature students (aged 21+) substantial work experience will be considered, as well as, or in place of, formal qualifications
