BSc (Hons) Applied Business Computing

Introduction
The aim of this programme is to enhance student’s career prospects in the Business IT industry. Students will be educated in up-to-the-minute industry standard software, tools and techniques using current computer technology. The students will also learn the high level skills which are currently in demand by employers both regionally and nationally.

This programme focuses on the knowledge in developing applications, analysing business needs and developing solutions by tailoring software. The course covers a range of techniques including business systems review, business process re-engineering and integrating business and software systems.

Initial Full Exemption and CEng/CSci (Partial fulfilment) from the British Computer Society (BCS) has been given for this programme.

Career Opportunities
This programme is designed to equip the students with the skills necessary to undertake a career in Applied Business Computing. Graduates from the programme will be able to make an immediate contribution to an organisation in a Business IT role perhaps as a Systems Analyst, Business Process Re-engineer or tailoring common business applications to suit the needs of the organisation. Upon completion of this programme, further study may also be possible on one of our wide range of Masters programmes.

Teaching and Assessment
Teaching methods include discussion group work, lectures, practical work, and group work, work based learning, open learning presentations and CAL. Assessment methods include examinations, time constrained tests, essays, multiple-choice tests, reports, computer based assessments, presentations, demonstrations and peer assessment.

Programme Structure
The 'top-up' programme is the final year of the BSc (Hons) degree programme in Applied Business Computing. As such there will be an expectation of any applicant that they have certain key skills and knowledge that will form the grounding for this year of study.

YEAR ONE:
In FIRST YEAR students will study the following subjects as Certificate in IT from The British Computer Society-BCS
• Information Systems
• Software Development
• Computer & Network Technology

YEAR TWO
In SECOND YEAR students will study the following subjects as Diploma in IT from The British Computer Society- BCS
• Professional Issues in IS Practice
• Computer Networks
• Database Systems
• Software Engineering 1

YEAR THREE
In FINAL YEAR, the student will study the following subjects to fulfil the coursework requirement of BSc (Hons) Applied Business Computing offered by the University of Sunderland
• Information Systems Project Management
• E-commerce Strategy and Management
• Human Computer Interaction
• Individual Project
• Software Engineering (Optional)

For the duration of the final year, students are engaged in an individual project of their choice. This will be industrially relevant and have both practical and research components.
