This course is the same as the one which is delivered on-campus at the University of Northampton. Students take the same modules and complete the same assessments. Students are provided with full access to the University's online library and virtual learning environment. This course is specifically designed for holders of HND in Computing, ICT or Business Systems qualifications (or similar UK and international qualifications). Students can obtain a BSc (Hons) degree in one year. The course is designed with employability in mind, providing students with the essential knowledge required by industry to bridge the computing skills gap. The course has been aligned to professional qualifications to ensure that the provision is focused on employer needs. The modules are mapped to the Skills Framework for Information Age (SFIA), as defined by the Sector Skills Council and governed by The British Computer Society (BCS), Information Management of Information Systems (IMIS) and the IT Service Management Forum (ITSMF). The course is assessed in terms of both theory and practice through assessments including practical implementations, reports, essays, presentations and examinations. Most modules are designed to develop problem-solving techniques and interpersonal skills. All classes take place at Birkbeck College (Bloomsbury campus) and students have full access to library facilities.

About this course

Applicants require a Pearson or SQA HND in Computing, ICT or Business Systems, or an equivalent qualification. Equivalent overseas qualifications, such as the Chinese Dazhuan Diploma, are also accepted for admission onto the course. Students who have successfully completed the first 2 years of a 3-year degree, or 3 years of a 4-year degree may also be eligible. Applicants whose native language is not English must provide evidence of their English language capability. The level required for study on Bachelor’s degree courses is IELTS 6.0 (minimum category score of 5.5) or equivalent.

Course programme

The course equips students with the critical skills of development and management of Information Systems (IS). It aims to develop students' knowledge, understanding and ability to apply these skills in a commercial environment through the application of Information and Communications Technology (ICT). The course provides students with the opportunity to study both the technical and business aspects of information sciences developing the commercial skills required for a career in business computing systems or service management.

All modules are compulsory. Students complete 120 credits.
