BSc (Hons) In Psychology and Criminology

Subjects covered Level 4 (Year 1: September – April) The aim of the Level 4 programme is to give all students a thorough grounding in a both Psychology and Criminology. Typical topics studied include: • Introduction to Psychology • Psychology of Emotion • Research Methods • Introduction to Criminology • Criminological Theories • Criminal Justice • Introduction to Biological Psychology • Academic Skills Level 5 (April in Year 1 – December in Year 2) Level 5 of the programme offers students the opportunity to develop their skills in more depth in a range of topics. Options are chosen from the following: • Social Psychology I • Biological Psychology • Developmental Psychology • Research and Data Analysis • Applied Research for Psychology • Introduction to Cognitive Psychology • Victimology • Types and Trends of Crime • Diversity and Crime Level 6 (January in Year 2 to June in Year 2) In the final Level of study students have further opportunity to specialise in their chosen area. For example: • Social Psychology • Individual Differences • Cognitive Psychology • Crime Prevention • Critical Issues in Criminology In addition to taught modules a dissertation will allow students to conduct research and investigate a topic in greater depth. The style of teaching and learning used in this programme has been carefully designed to suit the subject matter. We recognise that students learn in various ways, so we use a range of different teaching methods and situations to best deliver the learning outcomes for each module. The range of teaching and learning methods used in this programme includes: • Lecture based presentations • Individual and group project work • Individual presentations • Group and individual tutorials • Case studies • Laboratory experiments • Classroom activities promoting interaction at peer and tutor level Assessment A wide range of assessment methods are used in this programme, which have been chosen to suit the subject material being taught. The range of assessment methods you will experience will give you the confidence and capability to complete an Honours degree and progress further in your career. Your Tutor will be on hand to provide support during the assessment process and discuss any queries you may have. Graduates will have the knowledge and skills to progress into a range of careers onto progress into higher education. With their critical thinking, analytical and communications skills, criminology graduates are attractive to employers both inside and outside the criminal justice sector. Major employers include central and local government, the police and prison services, the court services, security services, and other non-profit-making organisations, including the NHS, educational institutions and charities that work with young offenders or victims of crime. Opportunities also exist in the private sector, for example in private security and in law practices. Criminology graduates also work in a range of social welfare posts, such as mental health support and drug rehabilitation, housing (as housing officers or in outreach support roles), as homelessness officers, and in refugee and victim support/counselling. Studying a psychology degree fosters a valuable aptitude for work in both the science and arts fields, and forms a flexible basis for a wide number of careers. Jobs directly related to psychology include: • Clinical psychologist • Educational psychologist • Further education lecturer • Higher education lecturer • Occupational psychologist • Sport and exercise psychologist Some psychology graduates become professional psychologists, and many work in related fields.
