Web design and development is an area of computer science that facilitates modern computing. As the technologies we use, such as our computers, mobile telephones and games consoles, are increasingly connected to the web, there is a growing need for people who can develop innovative ideas and create solutions for the future. This programme will provide you with all of the skills and knowledge needed for a career in the expanding web industry, as well as in the wider area of computer science and software development. You will develop coding, database and design skills, gain a valuable understanding of the needs of the user, and acquire strategic problem-solving skills that are highly sought after by employers.

About this course

This programme will prepare you for specialist jobs in the areas of web design, web development, mobile application and games development. Demand for these skills is growing, particularly in the retail sector with the expansion of online shopping, and there are also increasing opportunities in local and national government.

You will also be well placed to access a wide range of roles within software application development, IT management, and software and data consultancy. You may wish to start your own web-based technology business.

The programme is accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional. Successfully completing an accredited honours degree is the first step to full BCS membership and to being awarded chartered status.

How will I be assessed?

Assessments are varied and designed to ensure you acquire a range of skills, particularly those required by future employers. You will design and write programs, write reports and essays, critically analyse documents, deliver oral presentations and undertake examinations.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by staff who are passionate about student learning and development and who have recent experience in the software development industry. This provide a lively and highly effective learning environment. The course is delivered by specialists in web design, web development and computer science. The programme team includes active researchers in areas such as user experience design, information retrieval, e-commerce, web information architecture, visualisation and the application of problem-based learning in web systems. Academic staff are active researchers and regular contributors to conferences and journals. There will also be a number of guest lectures from leading industry businesses.
