Course programme

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma Applied Science covers a wide range of science topics branching across biology, chemistry, physics and some maths, all of which are applied to real life and vocational situations.

This is a 1 year, 60 credit and 360 Guided Learning Hour (GLH) qualification.

English and maths provide the skills you need to operate confidently, effectively and independently in learning, life and work. At Oldham College we are committed to developing these skills throughout your time with us. You will receive an initial assessment and, if you have not already achieved A*- C GCSE in these subjects, you will be supported in working towards this during your time with us in specialist classes at a level appropriate to you. If you have already achieved A*-C, you will continue to have these vital skills developed within your chosen course of study.

The assessment for this course takes place throughout the one year of study in the form of scientific practical assessment and report writing, as well as this you will be asked to write essays, produce presentations, and also take part in exam style assessments, particularly for the maths section of the course.
You will be given many opportunities to use the scientific equipment within the college, as well as this you will visit surrounding universities to attend workshops and meet researchers.
Progression routes from this can include entry to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science or directly into an apprenticeship or employment.
