The BTEC Diploma in Developing Counselling Skills introduces you to the three main theoretical approaches to counselling and shows you what you can expect from working with counselling agencies. As part of this qualification you are eligible to volunteer to work for an agency in a non-counselling capacity. Working as a listening support volunteer in an agency is also an effective way of securing a work placement for further counselling experience. Students on this course are able to progress to the Foundation Degree in Counselling which can lead to counsellor registration.

Course programme

The course aims to provide students with an understanding of the theory behind the main counselling approaches and the qualification of L3 Diploma plays a significant role in the training required to qualify as a counsellor. Students will learn about ethical practice and what skills are used in each of the counselling approaches. Whilst they won’t be expected to be proficient in working in these different approaches, students will have become experienced listeners and will be able to use a variety of counselling skills in the helping role. Working on self-awareness is a crucial element of this course.
