Becoming a teacher or trainer in education requires a lot of dedication to learning and continual professional development. Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training

Overview
If you would like to teach vocational subjects in further and/or higher training and education this nationally recognised qualification gives you the underpinning knowledge and skills to do just that in either a classroom or workshop setting. You will learn about teaching principles, planning and preparing sessions and how to follow government guidelines. In addition you will learn about the impact of safeguarding and equality and diversity in an educational environment.

Entry Requirements
All applications will be considered individually on merit but offers will normally be based on:
  • A related Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in your chosen area of specialism, as a minimum
  • A good standard of literacy and numeracy supported by general education equivalent to GCSE grade A*- C. You will undertake an initial assessment of your language, literacy and numeracy skills, as all teachers are required to be assessed against the minimum core of teachers' knowledge, understanding and personal skills.
  • You must also have access to 100 hours of teaching practice, either paid or voluntary.
  • You will also need a current enhanced Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) certificate that has been issued within 12 months of the start of the course. You can apply for one at enrolment, for a fee, if necessary.
  • Please note that the course will only run if a minimum number of students enrol.

    Composition of the Course
    On this programme you will study the following mandatory units:
  • Developing Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training
  • Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training
  • Theories, Principles and Models in Education and Training
  • Wider Professional Practice and Development in Education and Training
  • The optional units have been chosen to help you settle into your lecturing role and assist with the preparation of teaching materials. They are:
  • Using resources
  • Behaviour Management
  • Teaching in a specialist area
  • Equality and Diversity
  • Evaluating learning programmes
  • The full-time course runs over 1 year and attendance is one day per week. The part-time course runs over 2 years and attendance is one evening per week. You will also undertake 100 hours of teaching practice over the duration of the programme.

    Your timetable will include taught sessions, assignment support sessions, group tutorials and individual tutorials.

    The programme is managed anmd taught by an experienced lecturer and Higher Education Academy Fellow who is also the author of the book ‘The Games Teachers Play – Activities and Resources for KS3 to PGCHE’.

    The Diploma is internally assessed and will be based on demonstrating the ability to apply the knowledge and understanding in a practical teaching context. The emphasis is on the ability to develop and apply the skills and knowledge required in the successful delivery of learning. Part of the assessment is successfully completing eight practical teaching observations.

    The programme takes place at our Town Centre campus.

    Award Received
    Upon successful completion of the course you will receive Pearson BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (QCF).

    Progression
    On completion of the programme you will have the opportunity to claim Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status through a recognition process managed by The Society for Education and Training. Further information can be found on The Society’s website. Completers can also progress to assessor or verifier awards, degrees or Masters in Education and subject specialist teaching qualifications.

    Course Fees
    The course fees for 2016 are £4400. Part-time students will pay half the fees in year one and half in year two.

    Fees may increase should there be a significant change to the underlying cost of providing the course, such as in periods of high inflation, or fundamental changes to course structure due to regulatory or legal obligations. In all cases we will seek to set the maximum of any annual fee rise to the greater of the Retail Price Index or 5%.

    Fees are due at enrolment each year and can be paid either through a Student Loan or by your personal funds (an instalment plan is available if you are paying yourself). Once you have enrolled you are liable for the full year's fee, regardless of whether the full year is completed or not.

    QA systems are embedded throughout the College and the College is regulated by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and the Skills Funding Agency (SFA). The College is also routinely inspected by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) and Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills).
