BTEC Diploma level 2 in Art and Design

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Age at entry 16+

It is desirable that you have studied art before taking this course. Entry to this course requires a good general education and is dependent on a successful interview [where you need to bring examples of art and design work]. You will normally need to have at least one of the following:

• Edexcel BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Art & Design

A standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grades D or above (preferably including Art and English)

Related work experience

Other related level 1 or 2 qualifications

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
The Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design is for students who require a general art and design based qualification. The course is practical and students will learn how to produce a range of work through a variety of assignments. The assignments will be based on the activities of people working in the art and design sector. The most important thing you need is a lively and enquiring mind, a growing interest in art, craft and design, a willingness to explore new ideas and an ability to communicate your ideas effectively. There are very few areas of modern living that do not involve the role of an artist or designer, from the products we buy to the entertainments we view.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The course introduces you to the employment area you have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification. Through a variety of workshop practices, project work and visual studies you will learn about the key elements of art and design.

HOW WILL I LEARN?
You will be taught by industry experienced tutors and you will work in the modern, mature, creative and exciting environment of Art and Design at The Isle of Wight College. You will study in our well equipped facilities which include: 2D and 3D Studios and Textiles Studio. Practical and theoretical work is delivered and supported through a programme of workshops, lectures, demonstrations and tutorials. All students will leave with a portfolio of completed art work.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?
An Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A* - C. Students gaining an Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design will have access to a range of career and further education opportunities [minimum average of Merit level required]. This may be in the creative industries field and career opportunities include graphics/illustrations, textiles, museum/gallery work, product, interior or environmental design, conservations and heritage, teaching, freelance and fine art work. These skills are in great demand and are recognised and highly valued by employers and colleges. Many students choose to pursue their studies with the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design or Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Graphic Design, before either looking for employment or progressing to study a degree at University or College.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design is made up of eight units, which you will complete over the year. Your work will be internally assessed through a programme of assignments and externally assessed through a Final Major Project*. Your programme units of study will include:

• Working in the Art and Design Industry
• Working with Photography Briefs
• Working with Textiles Briefs.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS WILL I GET?

Your programme of study will include qualifications in:

Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design

Functional Skills in English [Level 2]

Depending on your GCSE grades you will also be required to retake GCSE English or Maths.

There is an additional cost for this course. A materials fee of £212 will cover materials, such as general consumable tools, materials and a trip, for use on your course. This amount may change due to cost of equipment. You may be eligible to apply for financial assistance to help meet these costs.
